iPhone Payment System

Ok I KNOW! Another iPhone entry! This one is worst of all! This isn’t even a “tech made easy” entry! In fact it’s completely irrelevant! BUT! This product is INSANELY awesome! So I had to share it with you guys!!!

Jack Dorsey (Twitter Co-Founder) and his company called Square (Formally Squirrel) has created pretty much the coolest tethering item for the iPhone. It’s a small square dongle (about the size of a Starburst candy) that you can swipe a credit card through. This dongle allows you to accept credit card payments anywhere!

Check out Kevin Rose’s Demo of the Square iPhone Payment System below…

Pretty neat huh? This seems like a great product for anyone who does freelance work. I know I will be getting one for my hair clients so they don’t have to have cash on them when I do their hair.

Are you ever on myspace and that darn “Punch the Monkey and win an iPhone!” add slows down your page? Annoying right?! Well there is a solution out there! It’s called ClickToFlash!

What it does is it blocks flash content from loading unless you click it. This makes pages with flash ads load a lot quicker!

Ok I know what you’re thinking… “but what about the pages I love that need flash?!” Well ClickToFlash has thought of everything! You can white list the sites you love like YouTube and the content that comes from them so you don’t have to click every little flash box within those sites.

Backupify! Free until Jan 31st!

Picture 14

Sorry to blast you guys with posts today but I heard about this on net@night this evening and it’s only free for a limited time so I had to share right away!! I know you understand.

What is Backupify?

Backupify is website for backing up documents, photos, and more from other websites. It performs a backup automatically from the site you are storing your files on not from your computer so it does not bog down your computer or need you to even turn on your computer!

What sites does Backupify support?

Backupify fully supports back up from Flickr, Twitter, Delicious, Zoho, Google Docs, Photobucket, and Wordpress. You can also backup Basecamp, Gmail, Facebook, FriendFeed, Blogger, and Hotmail but these services are still in beta. Soon you will also be able to backup YouTube, Xmarks, RssFeed, and Tumblr.

What should I use Backupify?

What happens if a Google goes out of business? You will lose all your data. What happens if your Facebook gets hacked or shut down? You lose everything you put into it. What happens if a site like Flickr or YouTube decides to disable your account because they think you are violating the TOS? You lose all your data.

Sure we want to think that the services these sites provide will go on forever but we should always prepare for the worst and it is never a bad idea not to have a backup. Better safe than sorry right?

Not only can this site be a virtual life saver! BUT! Until January 31st it is completely 100% free!!! and will remain free if you sign up before that date!

So what are you waiting for?! Head over to Backupify and keep your online social life safe! Right now! Go!

Shawnee

P.S. You can catch net@night every Tuesday at 4PM pacific standard time on Twit Live!

Shawnee’s Weekly App Favorite!

This week my favorite app is called Awesome Note! It is for the iPhone and it is Awesome! (As the name of the product states…)

A few weeks ago I decided I want to lower my paper use so I have been looking for an App on my phone that will help me organize my life but is also good for taking notes at meetings. No more Post its for me!!!

So when you first get the app it has a lovely layout and it is pretty simple to use.

photo-3

You have a tab for…

  • Hello (a place to post random notes)
  • My Idea
  • Study
  • Shopping
  • To-Do List
  • Business (on the next page)

There is also a spot in the upper left hand corner for making quick memos! Also if you are worried about security you can password protect each tab or just some tabs. You also are able to create pages of tabs suited just for you!

photo-5

When you create a To-Do list the app displays a notification number on the icon of how many things you have left to do on the current day. When you fill out each item you can post a day and time you need to have it done by! You can even rate them in importance.

photo-1

You can easily back up all your notes in seconds into your Google Documents account! Also if you have notes in your Google Doc account you can import them into Awesome Note easily.

The application also allows you to email anyone your notes right from the app!

Now that we have covered the serious business lets get to the fun part!

This App is completely customizable! Everything from the color of the tabs, to the icons, to how many tabs you have, and you can choose from an array of gorgeous stationary to write your notes on! There are also a few fonts and sizes to choose from!

photo-4
This is what mine looks like!

This app is amazing and fun to use! The lite version has all the features but you are limited on tabs and notes you can make. The full version is worth every penny if you need a great place to make lists, save reminders, and take notes.

Get Awesome Not HERE!!!!
There is a FREE lite version and the full app is $3.99

P.S. Do you have a favorite app for your PC, Mac, Smart Phone, or the Web? Let me know why it is your favorite app and I will spot light your comment in my next favorite app post. Just make sure you leave a site if you want me to credit more than your name :)

Watching TV on the internet!

If you are like me you often miss your favorite shows due to a social life or work and that’s no fun! So why pay a monthly fee for a DVR or a TiVo when you can just catch your favorite shows online?

Where do I watch it?

Many channels offer their shows on their own network sites for free. You can catch a lot of older movies and shows on YouTube in the movie section. There are also sites that offer a variety of shows from different networks such as Hulu and FanCast. You can also stream shows that are already out on DVD and movies through Netflix, but it has a monthly fee.

What are the best sites?

Lately I have been using Hulu and Netflix the most for streaming TV and movies.

Hulu: As far as I am concerned this site is the best for streaming free TV. It does not freeze mid show, the ads are short, and the shows are added rather quickly. The only con is it does not work with AppleTV if you have one.

Netflix: I love Netflix! The streaming and getting a DVD combo is amazing! The quality is good and it makes sure your show is loaded before it begins to play so there is no buffering every five minutes. The only cons are I wish there would be more seasons of current shows to stream instead of making you get them on DVD and also it is not free. It costs $8.99 a month for unlimited streaming and 1 DVD rental at a time.

YouTube: YouTube is great for old hard to find movies and TV shows (like the live action “The Tick!”) It is free and easy to navigate. The only con is load time can be a little slow.

Other places to catch TV on the web

CW TV – Remembers where you left off on a show, pretty good quality, ads, but freezes often and it takes them a while to post their shows.

ABC – Great quality, loads quickly, very little ads, they post episodes the following day, offers prime time, day time, and specials, but sometimes doesn’t load the first try.

Fox – Great quality, fast load times, very little ads,

Why shouldn’t I go to pirated TV sites?

These sites are often filled with links to sites that will spread viruses to your computer. Also if you strictly watch pirated TV you wont be supporting the show you are watching and it is more likely to get canceled. When you watch TV on a designated site your view is getting counted by the network. There are a ton of free sites to watch TV on that are legit. Don’t waste your time on these illegal ones.

What’s a bit torrent and why shouldn’t I use it to pirate media?

Bit torrents were created to help share open source programs (free programs for linux mostly) but have been misused to spread pirated materials. People often use bit torrents to spread malware (nasty viruses for your PC). You may have a virus scanner or a Mac but sooner or later you are going to get bit. Although the Mac operating system is much more stable than Windows, Macs aren’t bullet proof.

Happy online TV watching! If you have any questions or sites you like please feel free to comment!
